Welcome!
I’m Katherine Malmo, author of Who in This Room: The Realities of Cancer, Fish and Demolition (katherinemalmo.com CALYX Books, 2011), which is partly about my experience with Inflammatory Breast Cancer but also about fly fishing, welding, trekking, and all the other non-cancer parts of life. Paperback and electronic copies are available anywhere books are sold.
These days I’m nearly seven years past my diagnosis and cancer-free as far as I know. I am what my sister calls self-sustaining high-maintenance. I take a handful of vitamins twice a day; I adhere to a special diet devoid of gluten, soy and sugar. I drink tea, distilled water and almond milk (exclusively but never together). I used to be the person who would roll her eyes at the person I have become.
I’m also the mother of two lovely (most of the time) African-American babies, and the wife of an extremely likable software engineer. We have a sweet dog named Norah who has rocks in her head. We spend our time in Seattle and the San Juan Islands.
I’ve studied at the University of Washington and in a private writing program with Pam Houston. I’m currently a friend of the Seattle 7 Writers, an organization dedicated to promoting literacy. My words have been awarded the Bellevue Literary Review’s Goldberg Award for Fiction and have received many lovely reviews which you can read here.
This blog started as a resource for other toxin/chemical-averse parents and has grown into a place where we talk about parenting, adoption, multi-racial families, cancer, healthy living, sailing and whatever else we feel like.
